In memoriam of Dr. Esther Nyambura Mwangi, 1965-2019

Our Review Panel member Dr. Esther Nyambura Mwangi passed away in Nairobi on 5th October 2019. We will miss her as a person and as a colleague.

Dr. Esther Mwangi accepted to be a Review Panel member of the thematic module Ecosystems in the newly established r4d programme in 2013. She was actively involved in the selection of several large international research partnership projects in the thematic area of ecosystems management. As assigned panel member she accompanied a project with her expertise. In 2016, she participated in a field site visit in Madagascar with the international research team and colleagues from SDC and SNSF. As keynote speaker and Review Panel member she was very active in the International Conference on Research for Development in 2017 and gave an impressive personal speech on science-policy partnerships for transformation (see video External Link Iconof Esther's keynote 00:06:18-00:28:10 and her contributions to the debate 00:45:55-01:33:00; watch directly on YouTube External Link Icon)

We knew Esther as a gentle and cordial person who shared her knowledge and positions with a clear and sharp mind. With her theoretical background in institutional economics and her practical experience in working with local communities she brought invaluable expertise to the r4d programme. When we first met her in Bern, she brought a silk scarf from Bogor, Indonesia, where she was based at that time. We keep it in honour of her. It was a privilede and pleasure to work with Esther - we will deeply miss her.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues.
